I whole-heartedly agree.
It took me years of exploring other avenues until a friend asked if I knew anything about building a website. I had been tenatively testing the waters, but his query made me dive in.
And I’ve been playing with the dolphins ever since.

The funny part is that quote came from a country song I had in my head at the moment. It's Clay Walker - If I could make a living out of loving you.

If I could make a living out loving you, I'd be a millionaire in a week or two. I'd be doing what I love and loving what I do, If I could make a living out of loving you.

I completely agree with you. I see this back everyday in my college where I study (web)design. Everyone wants to be a web designer. But just a few actually like typing CSS and enjoy design problem solving. I expect that those are the people that will actually become a web designer.
