Top Albums of 2005

It’s been a busy and successful year, and it went by very, very quickly. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Anyway, here are my two-thousand-oh-five favorites…
- Sigur Rós – Takk
This year, Sigur Rós came up with an album name you can actually pronounce. Thanks, guys. The music? Well, that’s simply exquisite, again. The sounds that these Icelandic chaps are able to produce are nothing short of amazing. “Gong” kicks some serious ass. Trivia: the album came out on my birthday.
- Depeche Mode – Playing The Angel
Well, I’ll be damned… I had serious doubts Depeche Mode will ever get back to being as good as they once were, after that disaster, that “Exciter” in my mind was. And here they are, in my year’s end roundup. It sounds like a cliché, I know, but “Playing The Angel” is the band’s best since 1990 and “Violator”.
- QOTSA – Lullabies to Paralyse
Oliveri and Grohl are gone and I missed them on this album. Unfortunately, it never comes close to “Songs for the Deaf”, but it’s a solid release nevertheless. For once, I enjoyed the slower songs more that the two-minute attacks like “Medication”.
- Sufjan Stevens – Illinois
Illinois is the second of fifty states Stevens is gonna make an album about? That may take a while, but if they’ll all be as good as this, as far as I’m concerned, he can go right ahead.
- The Mars Volta – Frances the Mute
Even though I enjoy their debut a whole lot more, I consider Frances the Mute another great album. It’d make me happy if they would cut down the experimenting on the next one, though.

Wolf Parade – Apologies To The Queen Mary
Wolf Parade’s debut is wonderful. This album has been a part of my playlist on so many occasions, perhaps more than any other album in this list. Only time can tell, but this one has the potential of becoming a classic. Or special, at the very least.
Noteworthy: Frusciante – Curtains, The New Pornographers – Twin Cinema, Trail of Dead – Worlds Apart.
